Demographics

Weipa is situated on the western coast of Cape York Peninsular, approximately 800 km north west of Cairns & 200 km south of the tip of Australia. Weipa is primarily a mining town, operated by Rio Tinto Alcan which mines bauxite for aluminum production. Napranum, Mapoon, and Aurukun are all aboriginal communities surrounding the Weipa district. Weipa's population ranges between 3000 to 3500 people.
